Monsters¶
The faction of monsters is currently the only non-player character (NPC) faction in Eressea.
It had the faction ID 0, but since around round 572 it has had the ID (ii). Why actually (ii)? If you convert ii from Base36 to the decimal system, you get 666.
There are many different monster races with different characteristics and abilities.
The most common are the various Undead as well as Dragons and their followers.
Some monster types are rather rare, if not unique. Others, such as the braineaters, are (almost) only found in certain areas.
In certain circumstances, players can also own monster units (e.g. skeletons).
Braineaters¶
Braineaters populate the Astral Space.
They attack hidden from the mists and their attacks can make units forget some of the skills they have learned.
In the normal world they are only encountered when they have been thrown from their spheres by powerful spells.
Ents¶
Ents are powerful tree creatures.
Sometimes it's good to just avoid them because they often calm down after a while.
Information
Ents are summoned by Gwyrrd druids.
They also sometimes arise when their spells go wrong.
Igjarjuk¶
Id (igjr).
Igjarjuk is (or was?) an Ice Dragon, also called the Great Wyrm.
After its death, it evolved into an Undead Wyrm, a monster that intervened in the battle between Pentagram and Tirawon (and died a second time in the process).
According to rumors, Igjarjuk was last seen in the 13th World.
Perhaps he has seven lives?
Known Dragons¶
Dragons are among the strongest monster units.
They hatch from eggs as young dragons, later develop into dragons and further into Wyrms.
There are rumors that dragons can also reach Eressea from the Sphere of Chaos.
Dragons are particularly unpleasant because they drive away and eat farmers.
Often the farmers killed in this way later return as Undead.
Dragons can learn different skills and thus become more dangerous.
They can (like all monsters) attack player units.
In combat, they have dragon breath attacks, but also attack with teeth and claws.
They are difficult to wound and can therefore take a lot of hits.
Over time, dragons and wyrms begin to gather a retinue around themselves, called dracoids.
They are low, scaled, humanoid creatures who can fight with swords, spears or bows.
It is said that some mages can influence dragons.
However, it is doubtful that a fully grown dragon will really submit to the will of a magician, no matter how powerful.
There are different types of dragons, as described below.
Young Dragons¶
Young dragons develop into Adult Dragons.
Dragons¶
Dragons develop into Wyrms.
Wyrms¶
See Igjarjuk.
Singing kite¶
These miniature dragons have little in common with their larger counterparts.
They can hardly be counted as monsters
Sea snakes¶
The dragons are distant relatives Sea snakes that make the oceans unsafe and ambush passing ships.
However, boats should let them go in peace
Known Undead¶
Undead make up the largest part of the monsters.
They spawn where peasants die (from famine and disease, or as victims of Dragons), or where warriors fall in battle.
Undead can learn various Skills, making them more dangerous.
They can also mutate, which makes them significantly stronger.
Undead (like all monsters) can attack faction units.
In combat, they possess various special attacks and immunities.
They can attack with their bare hands (and are still considered Armed), but they can also carry weapons.
Note
Some mages are able to control the undead.
Until now, seven types of Undead are known.
Ghosts¶
Ghouls¶
Ghouls mutate into Ghosts.
Juju Zombies¶
Skeletons¶
Skeletons mutate into Skeleton Lords.
Skeleton Lords¶
Undead¶
These are obsolete, only exist in the old worlds, if at all.
Zombies¶
Zombies mutate into Juju Zombies.
Shadow Monsters¶
Shadow Demons¶
| Hit Points | Attack | Defense | Armor |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50 | 8 | 11 | 3 |
Shadow Demons have magic resistance.
Successful attacks cause panic in enemies, which reduces their attack or defense value by 1.
In combat, a Shadow Demon triggers 3 attacks: one magical attack, one unarmed attack (2d3), one magical attack.
Information
Shadow Demons can be summoned by Draig mages.
Shadow Masters¶
| Hit Points | Attack | Defense | Armor |
|---|---|---|---|
| 150 | 11 | 13 | 4 |
In combat, a Shadow Master triggers 4 attacks: one magical attack, one unarmed attack (2d4), two magical attacks again.
Shadow Master's victims can even get the equivalent of a week's worth of learning one of their skills per hit.
Information
Shadow Masters can be summoned by Draig mages.
